A Rainy Day Guide to Lyme Regis for Groups

A RAINY DAY GUIDE TO LYME REGIS, SO YOU YOU CAN STILL ENJOY YOUR STAY AWAY, NO MATTER THE WEATHER.

Looking for rainy day things to do in Lyme Regis? You’re in the right place. Winter here looks different to August. Streets are quieter. Seas are wilder. And some summer attractions close until spring.

That’s not a bad thing. It just means your rainy day plan needs to match what’s actually open. Below, we’ve listed exactly that. We’ve also added tips for families, and for making the most of a wet afternoon back at Lym House.

Indoor Things to Do in Lyme Regis This Winter

Four spots stay reliably open through the colder months. Here’s what to expect from each one.

Lyme Regis Museum

The museum is open year-round. Winter hours run Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

Inside, you’ll find the story of the town’s fossil history. There’s also plenty on its most famous resident, Mary Anning. The whole visit takes about an hour across a few compact floors.

Entry costs around £9.95 for adults. Note that only assistance dogs are allowed inside, so anyone with a dog will need to take a turn along the Cobb instead.

Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium

Located on the Cobb the aquarium keeps shorter winter hours. It’s open weekends only, and visits depend on weather and sea conditions. Check their website before you set off.

When it’s open, plan for thirty minutes to an hour. Dogs are welcome on a lead, so the whole group can go together.

The Town Mill and Brewery

This is your most reliable stop. The mill is free, self-guided, and open daily, though winter hours can run shorter depending on volunteers.

Dogs are allowed in the courtyard galleries. The working watermill itself is worth ten minutes on its own.

Next door, the Town Mill Brewery taproom stays open all year. It only closes on Christmas Day. If the rain sets in properly, this is where the group can settle for a couple of hours, drink some locally crafted beer, and maybe catch a glimpse of the local cockatoo.

Shoreline Sauna: A Lyme Regis Winter Tradition

The sauna runs Thursday to Sunday, all year round. Winter is actually its busiest season.

Booking ahead is essential, and private hire suits a group well. One thing to flag: under-16s aren’t permitted, so this works best for an adults’ weekend rather than a family trip.

Rainy Day Ideas for Families with Younger Children in Lyme Regis

Travelling with younger children? Here are a couple of extra options worth knowing for a rainy day in Lyme Regis.

Lyme Regis Amusement Arcade

Lyme Regis Amusement Arcade sits on Marine Parade and stays open every day of the year except Christmas Day. That makes it one of the few genuinely reliable options, whatever the weather’s doing. Coin pushers, grabber games, and a few rides for younger visitors won’t fill a whole afternoon, but they’re an easy twenty minutes right on the seafront.

Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

Although it is closed over winter, only open from February half term through to the end of October half term. It’s a genuinely good one for children if you’re visiting in the warmer months, but it’s not an option for a winter stay.

Practical Wet Weather Tips for Your Stay at Lym House

A few things that make a rainy stay at Lym House easier, based on what tends to catch groups out.

Layer up for the museum and the mill. Both are unheated in parts, so a jumper under a coat is worth more than it sounds on a cold day.

Use the boot room properly. It’s there so wet coats, muddy boots and dripping dog leads don’t end up trailing through the rest of the house. Get everyone into the habit of stopping there first on the way back in.

Light the wood burners early. Both take a little while to properly warm the rooms they’re in, so lighting them in the morning rather than waiting until everyone’s cold and back from a walk makes a real difference by the evening.

Check tide times before a coastal walk. The Cobb and the beaches either side of it change character fast in winter weather, and a falling tide is a much easier walk than a rising one.

Pack proper waterproofs, not just an umbrella. Wind off the sea makes umbrellas fairly useless along the front, so a decent coat will get more use than anything else you bring.

Bring something to do indoors. Cards, a couple of board games, or a book each go a long way on the afternoons when the weather simply doesn’t let up. There’s plenty of room to spread out and let a group split off into smaller groups if not everyone wants to do the same thing.

A Lyme Regis weekend rarely needs rescuing from bad weather. It just needs a plan built around what’s open, and a house worth coming back to at the end of it.

Lym House sleeps up to ten and sits a short walk from the museum, the Cobb, and the Town Mill.
