HISTORIC CHARM ON THE COAST
BEER, DEVON
Beer is the kind of coastal village that people stumble upon and then spend years trying to get back to. Tucked into a fold of the East Devon cliffs and invisible from the road, it sits on the edge of the Jurassic Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of fossil-rich limestone and sweeping chalk headlands that stretches east towards Dorset. The beach is shingle, sheltered, and genuinely beautiful. The pace is slow by design.
What makes Beer different is that it still works. Fishing boats are hauled up the beach each morning, fresh crab and mackerel find their way onto village menus the same day, and the community that surrounds it all feels rooted rather than performed. You can walk the South West Coast Path east to Seaton or west to the ancient village of Branscombe, book a fishing trip from the beach, or do very little at all. All of it feels right here.

THE PEARL OF DORSET
Lyme Regis, Dorset
Lyme Regis sits at the western edge of Dorset on one of the most geologically dramatic coastlines in the world. The Jurassic Coast — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — runs 95 miles east from here, and the cliffs around Lyme are among its most active: constantly eroding, constantly revealing fossils that have lain undisturbed for 180 million years. It is the kind of place that makes you feel the scale of things. The Cobb, the town’s ancient curved harbour wall, has stood here since the 13th century. The beach below it is sandy, sheltered, and genuinely one of the south coast’s finest.
What draws people back, though, is the town itself. Lyme has independent shops, good restaurants, a working fishing fleet, and a community calendar that fills the year — from the annual Fossil Festival to summer regattas and candlelit evenings along the Cobb. The South West Coast Path runs through it, offering walks in both directions: east to Charmouth and the vertiginous viewpoint of Golden Cap, west through the wild Undercliff nature reserve towards Seaton. It is a town that rewards simply being in it.

Saalbach, Austria
Saalbach sits in the Glemmtal valley in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps — a picture-postcard Austrian village of timber-balconied buildings and an onion-domed church, ringed on every side by mountains. In winter it is one of Austria’s great ski destinations, with over 270 kilometres of pistes across the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn — a linked network that suits everyone from first-timers to confident skiers looking for serious vertical. The après-ski is equally well-earned: mountain huts, slope-side bars, and a village centre that comes alive from mid-afternoon and doesn’t apologise for it.
When the snow melts, Saalbach transforms rather than quietens. The same lifts that carry skiers up in winter open the mountains to hikers and mountain bikers in summer, with over 400 kilometres of trails ranging from gentle valley walks to serious summit routes. The surrounding Hohe Tauern peaks offer some of the finest high-altitude scenery in the Alps, and the slower pace of the summer season reveals a village that retains genuine Austrian character — good food, alpine huts, and a quieter rhythm that rewards those who find it.
