There is a particular feeling that arrives with Starre House — not the rush of something impressive, but something quieter than that. You notice it first in the entrance: the weight of the door, the coolness of the stone, the way the light falls differently here.
Built in 1502, Starre House is the original heart of the Starre estate. It has housed Devon families for five centuries, and still stands with the self-assurance of a building made to last. The restoration has been careful not to flatten that character — the fireplaces, the timbers, the uneven thresholds that remind you, gently, that you are somewhere genuinely old.
What has changed is everything that makes a stay here truly comfortable. Bedrooms dressed with proper linens. Bathrooms that feel considered. A kitchen made for the kind of cooking that fills the whole house with warmth.
Starre House does not perform heritage. It simply lives in it — and after a day or two, so will you.
Inside Starre House
The Kitchen This is where the house finds its social gravity. A central preparation island with room for multiple cooks — or for those who prefer to observe from a stool with a glass in hand. The room faces the courtyard, and the light in the mornings is something worth getting up for.
The Dining Room A long oak table, seating twelve, beneath ceiling timbers that have hosted generations of meals before yours. Candlelit, unhurried — a room that makes the simplest dinner feel like a proper occasion.
The Sitting Room Built around the inglenook fireplace, as it should be. Deep sofas, good reading light, and no television to hurry the evening along. On cooler nights, it becomes the whole reason you came.
The Bedrooms Six bedrooms, each with its own character. The principal rooms are generous, dressed with quality linens and furnished with pieces that belong to a house of this age. Two en suite; bathrooms serve the remaining four in easy proximity.
The Bathrooms Finished in materials that complement the age of the house. Deep baths, excellent showers, and the kind of detail — proper towels, considered lighting — that distinguishes a well-prepared house from one that merely looks the part.
Out Door Living
WHEN INSIDE CAN WAIT
The south-facing terrace is where most days begin and end — sheltered enough in spring, sun-warmed enough in summer that eating outside becomes the obvious choice. Children find their own routes around the garden. The croquet lawn generates more competitive energy than anyone expects.
On warm evenings, dinner moves outside without much discussion. The light fades over the Devon hills, and no one is in any particular rush to go in.

Together, Starre House and Starre Barn form Starre Manor, sleeping up to 14.

The Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site begins almost at the end of the lane. From Beer, guests can walk east along the cliffs towards Seaton and Lyme Regis, or west towards Sidmouth — some of the finest stretches of the South West Coast Path, with views that stop you mid-stride.
