From Barn to Boutique: How Our First Renovation Inspireda Collection of Luxury Holiday Homes
Some stories dont start with a grand plan, they start with a renovation project ,a bit of faith, and a lot of hard work.
Ours began in Holmfirth, with an old cattle barn build in 1852 and first renovated into a home in the 1950s. Nothing had been touched since then. Old storage heaters, artex on the walls and ceilings, and dangerous electrics and broken down plumbing. But beneath all the layers of wallpaper and aged carpets was the essence of the building with the thick York stone walls, original fire place and beams that showed the potential waiting to be uncovered.
We spent weekends and evenings working on that first home, learning as we went guided by instinct and shared vision. Every beam we sanded, every wall we restored taught us something new. We did everything we could and bought in skilled labourers and craftsmen for the aras we required expertise. It was there that a lifelong love for heritage building, craftmanship and interior design began to take shape.
It was here the idea for design-led retreats first took root
Learning by doing
The Holmfirth barn was our classroom. We made mistakes, plenty of them, but each one taught us the craft of renovation, how to respect an old building while still making it liveable for modern family life.
We discovered the joy of designingspaces taht werent just beautiful but practical and personal. It was the beginning of a passion for creating homes with soul, where every detail matters and every imperfection tells a story.
A love that grew with every move
From that first project each home we moved into became another chapter in our design journey. Every renovation was different, new challenges, new ideas. But is was that first project that sparked a lifelong love of restoring heritage homes and with it set the threads that run through all our homes:
- A deep respect for heritage renovation and a drive to create balance between old character and modern comfort
- Everything we have in our homes, has to earn its right to be there – thoughtful, in keeping and with meaning
- We are merely castodians of the properties we renovate. Do them to the best of our ability to ensure they have longevity.
From passion to purpose
What started as one heritage restoration then evolved into something much bigger – a way of life. Renovating and designing hertiage properties and populating them with stunning interiors to welcoming guests became more than creating beautiful spaces. It became about how people experience them, how a home can feel both deeply personal and effortlessly welcoming.
This mindset eventually shaped every property that followed.each one with its own history and personality. Every new project is a continuation of that first story – each home should honour the past while embracing the present.
We now have a wonderful collection of luxury character holday homes. Each boutique accommodation is designed with our guests in mind.
Our next blog will be “About Our Collection”.
