AUTUMNS GOLDEN PATH
There is something magical about the Devon & Dorset coast in the Autumn months. The summer crowds have ebbed away leaving the coastal paths quieter and calmer. The sun sits lower casting a warm golden light over the sea an the air holds that crisp freshness which makes every breath feel invigorating.
We will be doing a series for our “muddy boots” Obstgarten guests, who love to base themselves with us to take advantage of our location for walks along the Jurassic coastline
This is one of our favourite stretches not only for the stunning views, but is combines both walking along the windy steep undercliffs, pebble beachland and then up into the higher farmland with breathtaking scenery.
WHY AUTUMN MONTHS
- Perfect walking weather – cooler than summer, but still with long light filled days
- Rich colours – hedgerows heavy with berries, bracken turning bronze and sunsets that seem to set the sea on fire
- Peace & quiet – more space on the coastal pathways, less bustle in the villages and as you reach the beach from the undercliffs often you are the only ones on the beach.
THE ROUTE
Starting from Starre, walk in the the village of Beer and head towards the Caravan Park – The South West Coastal Path. The route climbs steadily rewarding you with panoramic views over chalk cliffs. You will be able to see many seabirds and if lucky dolphins playing offshore. The path will then take you down a steep path to the undercliffs. This is not for the faint hearted, and would recommend sturdy footwear. You will then come out onto the beach, which seems to be windy at all times of year! As you walk along the beach, Branscombe beach will come into sight, were the Sea Shanty Beach Cafe is there to welcome you for a well earned cuppa and cake! (Open 9 am to 4:30 pm). After your refuel here you can take the steep pathway up the the upper coastal path. This needs a certain level of fitness for the 85 steps at the end of a very steep hill but you are rewareded with the absolutely magnificent views at the top.
This walk is approximately miles and will take around 3 hours allowing for the essential cuppa!
